Social and psychological safety make an essential difference

Today is the National Anti-Bullying Day. When we talk about safety, we often think of physical safety: PPE, wearing a helmet, clear communication, and well-defined agreements. But safety is more than that.

Social and psychological safety are just as important and have a significant impact on the quality of our work. Together, they determine whether people feel free to speak up about who they are, what they think, and what they need to do their work well and safely.

Essential difference

Safety ultimately depends on how we treat each other. Because no matter how well procedures and resources are in place, if someone feels their opinion doesn’t matter, they will stay silent. And that’s exactly when we miss important signals about potential risks or unsafe situations. Social and psychological safety make a crucial difference here.

That’s why we continue to invest in an open organization where everyone feels heard and seen, because only then can we strengthen safety in its fullest sense. We also take concrete steps to support this. For example, we are frequently present on project sites, making ourselves visible and approachable for our skilled workers and creating accessible moments for them to share questions, concerns, or ideas.

Trust is build on action

But visibility alone is not enough, what truly matters is what we do next. Trust is built when words are turned into action. This means we don’t just listen; we act. For instance, we support workers in arranging medical appointments when needed and actively guide them through the process. We also continuously look for ways to make work more comfortable and safer, such as improving breathable workwear and providing better-fitting hearing protection or custom-made earplugs.

These practical improvements show that signals are taken seriously and that everyone’s well-being matters. In this way, we are steadily building a work environment where people feel not only physically, but also socially and psychologically safe.
